PARIS - French police and rescue services conducted a major training exercise late Tuesday creating practice bomb attacks on the Paris metro and bus network.
Some 400 police and firefighters plus 150 vehicles were mobilised in the exercise, which began with a replicated bomb attack with radioactive materials on a metro train.
While rescue workers were treating the "injured" a suspicious device was found on the platform, but was made safe by bomb experts.
The exercise included a second simulated bomb attack on a bus just moments later on the other side of the city.
"France isn't more a threat than other countries but it isn't at less threat either," said Interior Minister Michele Alliot-Marie, who monitored the exercise.
She said it was the first time a joint exercise tested the ability of different police and rescue services to work together effectively.
