France condemned "violence committed against protestors" during anti-government demonstrations in Iran, the foreign ministry said on Tuesday.

"France firmly condemns the violence committed against protestors and demands that people arrested (in the protests) be freed," said ministry spokesman Bernard Valero.

Thousands of opposition supporters took to the streets of the Iranian capital on Monday in support of Arab uprisings that quickly turned into anti-government demonstrations.

Violent clashes ensued in which riot police fired tear gas and paintballs at demonstrators, witnesses and websites said.
