Five suspected members of a recruitment ring for Islamic extremists sent to Pakistan and Afghanistan have been charged with terrorism offences in Paris, a judicial source said Friday.

Seven other suspects arrested during raids in Paris and the surrounding region earlier this week were released without charge, he said. The other five were formally charged on Wednesday.

Officers from the French domestic intelligence service DCRI carried out the raids. Some of those arrested were Tunisian-born.

One of the suspects allegedly ran a website for recruiting jihadists.
