France urged Israel and Lebanon Tuesday to show "responsibility" and respect for the UN-demarcated border between the two countries after deadly clashes on the tense frontier left several dead.

"I invite the parties to show a sense of responsibility and full respect for the Blue Line, in accordance with (UN) Security Council resolution 1701," Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said in a statement after the clashes.

Kouchner said France "is waiting for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon to shed light on this incident so that responsibility can be determined and appropriate measures taken."

The clashes saw Lebanese and Israeli troops trade fire along their border in the worst clash since a 2006 war, with two Lebanese soldiers, a journalist and a senior Israeli officer killed.
