PARIS, Oct 26, 2006 (AFP) - France Telecom reported on Thursday that sales had risen by 8.9 percent in the third quarter to EUR 13.1 billion, exceeding forecasts by analysts.

The company also stood by most of its forecasts for 2006.

On a comparable asset base, sales rose by 1.2 percent. Analysts had expected sales to total about EUR 12.97 billion.

The gross operating margin rose to 37.4 percent in line with targets to generate a margin of EUR 4.88 billion, an increase of 3.5 percent.

Finance director Gervais Pellissier said that the results enabled the group to confirm that it could generate cash flow from developing existing activities of EUR 7 billion this year.

But the group said that it would not achieve its target of internal growth of sales of two percent this year. France Telecom had already announced this in July.

Pellissier said that the results went "in the right direction" owing to strong performance in France where it was the leader in high-speed connections for the general consumer with 50.3 percent of the market, and was also the leader in the mobile telephone sector with 22.54 million customers, an increase of four percent.
