Fox TV unamused by French 'Temptation Island' spoof
A French region launched an online game “Temptation Auvergne” but US studio’s global franchise “Temptation Island” was not amused and accused them of plagiarism.Clermont Ferrand – Twentieth Century Fox is accusing a French region of plagiarism over a spoof website that makes light of the US studio's global franchise "Temptation Island."
Best known for its ancient volcanoes, fresh water springs and mouth-watering array of local cheeses, the central region of Auvergne launched an online game last month aimed at updating its image and boosting tourism.
On a website located at www.delatentation.com, the host of a spoof game show called "Temptation Auvergne" invites viewers to send in a joke video of themselves for a chance to win a three-day trip to the region.
But the Auvergne regional council received a letter from the US studio last Friday, accusing it of copying its programme – which was bought in France and ran for seven seasons on the mass audience television station TF1.
"In the letter, Fox gives us 10 days to prove that we are not plagiarising its show and that this has nothing to do with it," a spokeswoman said Tuesday.
"It's not plagiarism. It's a parody: the idea is to use the conventions of reality TV shows – not just 'Temptation Island' – in an offbeat, humorous spirit," she said.
Auvergne's council is confident it is protected under French intellectual property law on parody and satire and says more than 250 people have joined a petition on Facebook to support it and "the right to parody in France."
