COPENHAGEN, July 4 (AFP) - Danish police are investigating whether a Frenchman who has admitted to killing nine people may have raped and tried to kill a young Danish girl in 1999, Ritzau news agency reported on Sunday.

A sketch of the man who violently raped and attempted to strangle an 11-year-old girl at a Danish beach five years ago bears a strong resemblance to Frenchman Michel Fourniret, 62, who has confessed to murdering eight women and girls and one man between 1987 and 2001, Ritzau said.

"(The) drawing corresponds well to the pictures of Fourniret," it quoted Ove Groth - the deputy police commissioner in Nykoebing Falster, the area south of Copenhagen where the rape took place - as saying.

Police planned to compare DNA collected after the 1999 rape with Fourniret's DNA to determine whether he could be the perpetrator, according to Ritzau.
