A gunman shot and wounded four people close to a school in the French Pacific island territory of New Caledonia on Tuesday, police told AFP.

Police arrested the man shortly after the apparent random shooting in Kamere, a district north of the capital Noumea.

All four victims -- two adults and two minors -- were rushed to hospital with wounds to the head, legs and thighs, a national police spokesman said. One of them was in critical condition.

The suspect, who was known to police prior to the incident, was taken to a police station in Noumea.
