Paris - Four people were killed Saturday when two light aircraft collided in mid-air in western France, local authorities said.

Eleonore Lacroix of the Charente-Maritime prefecture said the dead were the solo woman pilot in one aircraft and the pilot of the other with his two passengers.

The first plane was heading north from Royan and the second was flying northwest from Cognac when they collided over the town of Beaugeay, she said.

Transport minister Dominique Bussereau had gone to the scene, his department said.
