Former French minister Georges Tron has been charged with rape and conditionally released following accusations from three women, prosecutors and his lawyer said Wednesday.

Tron, formerly a junior civil service minister, is facing charges of rape and sexual assault by "a person in authority", prosecutor Marie-Suzanne Le Queau said after Tron appeared before judges in a court in Evry, outside Paris.

His lawyer Olivier Schnerb said the conditions for Tron's release include that he is not allowed to meet with any of his accusers.
