LYON, France, July 2, 2007 (AFP) - French international striker Sylvain Wiltord was arrested by police on Monday as he began pre-season training with his club side Lyon, an AFP journalist at the scene reported.

An eyewitness said that four policemen accompanied Lyon administrative director Marino Faccioli into the club dressing-rooms and they then emerged with Wiltord.

The 33-year-old player has been in dispute with Lyon, the reigning French champions, over disciplinary matters for the last few months and his future at the club had been in doubt.

The former Arsenal striker appeared before a Lyon disciplinary committee on May 14 to answer charges that he had broken club rules.

There was no immediate word from police on why Wiltord had been arrested but there had been press reports linking his name to a case of drug trafficking that was unearthed in June.

A Lyon official also told AFP that the player had been caught speeding in his car several times and had failed to respond to police charges.
