Five killed after Andorran helicopter gets tangled in trees
Five people were killed and one survived with severe burns Wednesday when their helicopter smashed into the Pyrenees mountains in Andorra, emergency services said.
The accident happened on Wednesday morning as the helicopter ferried food supplies to the Juclar hiking lodge at around 2,300 metres (7,500 feet) altitude in the northeast of the rugged principality, near the French border.
An eyewitness told AFP that the helicopter lost control when the cable used to lower the food supply became tangled in trees.
The helicopter's pilot and mechanic were killed, along with the lodge's guardian, a carpenter and a 40-year-old Argentinian employee of the Ecotecnic water treatment business.
Another Ecotecnic employee, a Frenchman aged around 35, was the sole survivor and has been hospitalised in the Spanish city of Barcelona with 70 percent burns to his body, the company said.
