ANNECY - Five children were killed and 12 injured on Monday when a train ploughed into a packed school bus on a level crossing in the French Alps, local officials said.

The crash occurred at around 2:00 pm (1200 GMT) in the town of Mesinges, when a regional train linking nearby Evian and Thonon-les-Bains collided with a bus carrying around 50 children.

"Five children were killed. Six are seriously injured and six slightly injured," said an official at the local prefecture.

A spokeswoman for the French state rail company SNCF said several train passengers were also lightly injured.

Local authorities have set up a crisis cell and the deputy prefect was at the scene. Interior Minister Michele Alliot-Marie and Transport Minister Dominique Bussereau were also headed for the site of the accident.

According to internal SNCF data, the level crossing was functioning properly at the time, the spokeswoman said.
