BORDEAUX, France, Feb 8 (AFP) - Five people were arrested Tuesday in connection with attempts to blow up a restaurant belonging to star French chef Alain Ducasse, police said.

The five, all suspected Basque militants, were detained near the Spanish border in southwest France, they said.

Ducasse, France's most famous chef who has also made a name for himself in New York, has a part stake in a restaurant in Bidarray in the region.

Twice - once in March last year and once in November 2003 - gas bottles linked to timed explosives which failed to go off were found against the building.

Investigators suspect the devices were part of an extortion racket that Basque militants sometimes operated on business owners in the region.
