MARSEILLE, France, June 14 (AFP) - Ex-Metz coach Jean Fernandez was named as the new boss at French giants Marseille on Tuesday on a two-year deal, the club's official website said.

The 50-year-old takes over from Philippe Troussier and returns to the club where he played from 1975-80.

Fernandez, who has never won a trophy in a 15 year coaching career but discovered the talents of players like Zinedine Zidane, had a brief spell in charge of the club from July to November 1992.

Troussier, who took over in November 2004, didn't have his contract renewed after the club finished in fifth place last season and out of the Champions League places.
