TOURS, France, Dec 21 (AFP) - A farmer shot and killed his wife and two neighbours before turning his gun on himself Wednesday in a tragic drama that shocked a tiny village in central France, according to paramedics and police.

The man, aged 65, also shot and wounded the neighbour's 19-year-old son in the legs, paramedics said.

The killings occurred in a hamlet called Les Bouleaux, a village of half a dozen rural homes close to the town of Pruniers.

According to paramedics and witnesses, it appeared the man initially shot the two neighbours, a couple aged 48 and 46, in their house, where he also wounded their son.

He then went to his mother-in-law's house where he shot his wife and then himself.

The reasons for the murder-suicide were not immediately known.

"These were two families that have lived in the village for several generations, and there have never been problems between them before," one municipal employee told AFP.

The owner of a cafe in nearby Pruniers said the farmer and his wife, who worked in a retirement home, were "charming, energetic people with no history of trouble."

She added that "the whole village is in shock."
