PARIS, May 26 (AFP) - Eurotunnel, the French-British group operating rail service beneath the Channel, said Wednesday it had named Dirk Broek of the Netherlands to head its freight unit.

Broek, 40, currently head of the rail freight group Conliner, will assume his duties at Eurotunnel on June 1.

On Monday the company announced that the freight subsidiary had been denied the backing from creditor banks it needed to begin operations

Eurotunnel's new board of directors is attempting to restructure the group's EUR 9 billion (USD 11 billion) debt to avoid a possible bankruptcy at the end of 2006.

The previous board was ousted by shareholders at a general assembly April 9.
