LILLE, France, Aug 10 (AFP) - Humidity and rain caused delays on high-speed Eurostar rail lines from Britain to France and Belgium on Tuesday, officials at the French national railway SNCF said.

Nineteen morning trains heading to mainland Europe experienced delays of up to 90 minutes, and traffic remained slow late in the afternoon, according to SNCF officials in the northern French town of Lille.

A spokesman for Eurotunnel, the company that operates the Channel tunnel, told AFP that excessive humidity - from both rain water on the trains and condensation in the tunnel - had caused signalling problems.

The spokesman described the problem as routine, adding that it did not pose any security risks.
