ROME, May 8, 2007 (AFP) - Police in Italy, France and Spain have busted a drug ring that smuggled cocaine and hashish into Europe, Italian officers told AFP Tuesday.

Twenty-four people were arrested in the three EU countries, 13 of them in Italy, Carabinieri Captain Giuseppe Panarello said.

The gang allegedly brought the narcotics into Spain from Colombia, then drove them through France into Italy where they were sold on to street dealers in Milan and Sardinia.

Separately, Italian police in Sicily said they arrested 30 people Tuesday in relation to the discovery of 6,500 marijuana plants hidden among tomatoes and eggplants being grown in a greenhouse in the south of the island.

The illegal crop was worth some two million euros (2.7 million dollars). Officers, who raided the property after an 18-month investigation, also found 110 kilos of marijuana being dried.
