EU's Ashton lacks drive for defence aims: France

France's defence minister complained Tuesday that EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton lacks the necessary drive to develop common European defence operations.

"Because of Mrs Ashton's personality... we do not feel she is up to the responsibility of setting up a specifically European planning and command system," minister Gerard Longuet told reporters.

He said that current joint European Union engagements were mostly "civilian operations" but that France, Germany and Poland wanted to develop an EU-wide defence bloc to complement US military missions.
