The European parliament called on Iran to lift the threat of execution by stoning on Sakineh Mohammadi-Ashtiani, who was found guilty of adultery, in a unanimous vote on Wednesday.

The resolution also urged Iran to suspend a death sentence on 18-year-old Ebrahim Hamidi, who is accused of sodomy, and release all those jailed after demonstrating peacefully.

The resolution stressed freedom of thought, conscience and religion, which are "fundamental rights that should be guaranteed in all circumstances."

Several politicians donned white T-shirts, emblazoned with Mohammadi-Ashtiani's face and the words "Save Sakineh" written below it during the vote.

The 43-year-old was condemned to death by stoning in 2006 for adultery and complicity in her husband's murder, sparking an international campaign calling on Iran to save her life.
