BRUSSELS, May 17, 2006 (AFP) - EU antitrust regulators have carried out surprise visits on gas companies in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany and Italy on suspicions that they may have abused their market power, the EU commission said Wednesday.

"The commission has reason to believe that the companies concerned may have violated (EU) antitrust rules that prohibit restrictive business practices and/or abuse of a dominant market position," it said in a statement.

The EU executive did not name the companies that had been targeted in the raids, which were carried out on Tuesday.
