BRUSSELS, May 26 (AFP) - Ever optimistic, the European Commission suggested Thursday that "yes" supporters on the EU's constitution in France could stage a Liverpool-style comeback and pip the "no" campaign at the post.

The European Union's executive arm is maintaining an upbeat front despite the latest poll suggesting a widening lead for opponents of the constitution who have 54 percent of the vote.

Spokeswoman Francoise Le Bail drew succour from Liverpool's stunning win in the Champions League final in Istanbul Wednesday night, when they came back from 3-0 down at half time to beat the mighty AC Milan on penalties.

"There are some who feel it could be a Liverpool vote. It's going to be 3-0 till half time, they they will manage to get the upper hand and win on the day," she told reporters.

Most analysts forecast that a French "no" to the constitution - designed to prevent decision-making gridlock in the expanding EU - would plunge the bloc into a prolonged period of internal wrangling.
