EU commissioner welcomes Brussels finance deal
Michel Barnier, the European commissioner for the internal market, welcomed the historic European finance pact agreed at the Brussels summit Friday.
"It's a good agreement because it answers the question that has confronted Europe for 15 years: we wanted monetary union, but we didn't have the courage and the audacity to continue economic union," he said.
"This agreement ... lays the foundation for what was needed."
The agreement would establish the ability for Europe to act proactively and prevent future crises, he added.
"It paves the way for better integration and is a true step forward for Europe."
