EU commissioner to be tasked with euro: Barroso

The European Union's Economic Commissioner Olli Rehn is to be tasked with managing the euro, commission head Jose Manuel Barroso said on Thursday after a debt crisis summit in Brussels.

"I intend to task Olli Rehn with extra responsibilities. He will become deputy-head of the commission for economic and monetary affairs and the euro," Barroso told the European parliament in Strasbourg.

"Having a commissioner tasked especially with the euro shows that we want euro governance to happen within a communal framework," he said, hours after Europe sealed a deal aimed at fixing its festering debt crisis.

"It's fundamentally important but also from a symbolic point of view, and symbols are important," he said.

Rehn's nomination could lead to the creation of the job of eurozone finance minister that has been called for by some European leaders.
