CHAMONIX, France, Sept 22 (AFP) - A Dutchman was killed and a companion was injured when an unstable section of snow gave way as they scaled the challenging Mont Blanc mountain in the Alps, French police said Wednesday.

The two men, both aged in their 30s, were swept away at 4,000 metres (13,000 feet) up the side of Europe's highest mountain, on a peak known as Mont Maudit (or "Cursed Mountain"). The man killed had his head smashed against rocks as he slid down the slope.
