PARIS, March 15 (AFP) - Much of France faces drought this year after an unusually dry autumn and winter, weather experts warned Tuesday.

Rainfall between October and February was half normal levels in areas of the north, west and southwest, the state meteorological office Meteo-France said. Parts of the south and southeast were also affected.

The situation recalled the year 2003, when a long period of rainlessness was followed by a lethal heatwave in July and August.

"But the drought in 2003 began in February and this year the rain deficit goes back to November," said Michel Schneider of Meteo-France.

The government has convened a special committee of representatives from several ministries to monitor developments.
