PARIS, Nov 23 (AFP) - Domestic violence claims the life of one woman every four days in France, with one third of all deaths linked to a separation, according to a government study published on Wednesday.

A total of 164 women and 47 men were killed in domestic violence incidents in 2003 and 2004, according to the study released ahead of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to be marked on Friday.

Of the victims, all but one of the women were killed by a man, and all but one of the men by a woman.

"The period surrounding a separation clearly carries high risks, since it is involved in 31 percent of cases," according to the study, which was based on questionnaires sent to police around the country.

In one in five cases of murder, the killer later committed suicide, the study showed.
