ANNECY, France, April 27 (AFP) - A Qatari diplomat caught on radar speeding at 214 kilometres an hour (133 miles an hour) in the Mont Blanc tunnel between France and Italy has escaped any sort of legal punishment because of his diplomatic immunity, police said.

The man, who works in Qatar's embassy in Paris, was stopped by police on April 16 after their radar flashed him going more than three times over the 70 kilometre per hour limit in the tunnel, which is under strict surveillance following a deadly 1999 truck fire that killed 39 people.

But once police confirmed the diplomatic licence plates on his powerful car and his diplomatic corps identification, they had no choice but to let him go.

An ordinary motorist would have lost his driving permit on the spot and been heavily fined.
