VERNAISON, France, June 16 (AFP) - French police on Thursday detained a 19 year-old man who was found to be in possession of detonators, chemicals and pictures of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, officials said.

The man, who has not been named, was arrested at his flat in a council estate at Vernaison, 15 kilometres (10 miles) south of Lyon.

The anti-terrorist section of the Paris prosecutor's office has taken charge of the case but refused to comment.

Neighbours said the man was of native French origin and lived with his mother and elder sister.

A source close to the investigation said "it's a kid who's a bit sick in the head and fascinated by explosives."

Police raided his home early Thursday morning as part of a drugs enquiry and were surprised by what they discovered.
