EVREUX, France, Feb 27 (AFP) - A first edition of French philosopher Rene Descartes' 1637 work "Discourse on Method" was sold Sunday for EUR 78,000 (USD 103,000) at auction in Evreux northwest of Paris.

The city's auction house did not reveal the identity of the buyer, who used a French bookseller as his intermediary in order to bid by telephone.

The book, which had been given an estimated value of EUR 50,000 was recently uncovered in a private library in western France by rare books expert Pierre Poulain, who described the edition as a rare find.

Most experts believe that only about 30 first editions of the Descartes work exist in France, most of which are held by public libraries.
