LISBON, Nov 24 (AFP) - French film star Gerard Depardieu, who already produces wine in France and north Africa, is shopping for land in a well-established winemaking area in northern Portugal, daily business newspaper Diario Economico reported Wednesday.

The celebrity has looked into several options, including a farmhouse on a48 hectare (118 acre) tract of land in the Douro valley region, an area of rolling hills where Portugal's famous port wine is made, the paper said citing unnamed sources close to the negotiations.

Half of the property, which is worth some EUR 5 million euros (USD 6.5 million) according to local realtors, is made up of vineyards, while the rest is made up of fruit trees, it added.

The property contains warehouses with a capacity to store more than 212,000 litres (55,120 gallons) of wine.

Depardieu, who plays Obelix in the Asterix films, already produces high-quality wine in three vineyards in southern France as well as at properties he owns in Morocco and Algeria.

The 55-year-old star, who has confessed to abusing alcohol in the past, has said his income from making films gives him the freedom to indulge his passion for making wine.

Portugal already has one other famous winemaker. British pop veteran Sir Cliff Richard has since 2002 sold red wine which he produces at his vineyard in the southern province of Algarve, Portugal's top tourist destination.
