Paris – Tibet's spiritual leader the Dalai Lama will meet with the Chinese community when he visits Paris this weekend in a trip Beijing warns will damage France-China relations, his aides said Thursday.

"A man of reconciliation and of dialogue, the Dalai Lama advocates openness and calls for frank and friendly relations between the Tibetan and Chinese peoples," said a statement from the Tibetan Office in Paris.

The meeting on Saturday will be "one of the highlights" of his two-day visit, it said, noting that "as was the case in Germany and the United States, many Chinese had requested a meeting."

Beijing accuses the Dalai Lama of seeking independence for Tibet and had warned that its relations with Paris would suffer if the trip went ahead.

Paris Mayor Bertrand Delanoe was due on Sunday to make the Dalai Lama, who insists he wants only meaningful autonomy for his homeland, an honorary citizen of the French capital.

The Green party members of the Paris city council have hung portraits of the Dalai Lama and of the Chinese dissident Hu Jia from the windows of their offices near the city hall.
