Czech PM backs France over Roma expulsion
Czech Prime Minister Petr Necas on Thursday backed French President Nicolas Sarkozy in a row over the expulsion of Roma from France to Romania and Bulgaria.
"Laws must be obeyed. This is valid for everyone regardless of their citizenship, colour of skin, ethnicity," Necas told public Czech Television on the fringes of a European Union summit in Brussels.
"It is also true that a (EU) member country has the right to evict from its territory those who violate laws," he added.
France had sparked uproar worldwide by sending Roma back to eastern European EU member countries.
Sarkozy said at the summit on Thursday that France would continue to dismantle "any illegal camps."
He also complained that his country was hurt by parallels drawn between current Roma expulsions and World War II deportations by European Commission justice chief Viviane Reding earlier this week.
