BRIANCON, France, July 17, 2007 (AFP) - France president and jogging enthusiast Nicolas Sarkozy on Tuesday followed the ninth stage of the Tour de France from the race director's car.

Sarkozy joined the race after the start and began to follow the riders with the director of the Tour Christian Prudhomme at the foot of the mammoth Galibier climb.

Sarkozy admitted in a television interview with former French champion Laurent Jalabert that he has swapped two wheels for a morning run due to the busy schedule of a head of state.

"Since the beginning of the electoral campaign, I have been unable to get back onto my bike. I have to settle for jogging. But the bikes are still at home," he said.

The last French president to visit the Tour was Jacques Chirac in 1998.
