LILLE, France, Jan 17, 2007 (AFP) - French customs officials have seized 2.3 tonnes of contraband cigarettes headed to Britain in a Lithuanian-registered truck, authorities said Wednesday.The cargo, which had been driven from Italy, was detected on January 10 in a search of the truck at Dunkirk, before it was to have crossed the Channel.The 11,650 cartons were hidden inside insulation hoardings placed in metal cases.The Lithuanian driver was released after it was determined he was unaware of the cigarettes

LILLE, France, Jan 17, 2007 (AFP) - French customs officials have seized 2.3 tonnes of contraband cigarettes headed to Britain in a Lithuanian-registered truck, authorities said Wednesday.

The cargo, which had been driven from Italy, was detected on January 10 in a search of the truck at Dunkirk, before it was to have crossed the Channel.

The 11,650 cartons were hidden inside insulation hoardings placed in metal cases.

The Lithuanian driver was released after it was determined he was unaware of the cigarettes in the load.
