NANTES, France, Oct 20 (AFP) - A 12-year-old girl walking along a footpath on her way to a school gym class in western France was killed Wednesday when a crane from a nearby building site came crashing down on her, police said.

The student and three vehicles were crushed by the crane's boom in the accident in the city of Nantes.

Three workers who had been dismantling the crane were taken into custody for questioning, officers said.

Another student was injured by flying glass. Teachers and other pupils at the Saint-Paul de Reze school who had also been in the street at the moment of the drama were given emergency psychological counselling.

The company handling the dismantling of the crane, Mediaco, said the machinery was less than three years old.

An executive who declined to be named speculated that wind may have caused the boom to become unbalanced as it was being detached from its tower.
