PARIS, Dec 20 (AFP) - Four armed robbers posing as police made off with EUR 1.5 million (USD 2 million) worth of jewels from a boutique in a chic Paris neighbourhood at the weekend, French police said Monday.

The gang burst into the jewellery shop in the 16th arrondissement, or district, brandishing automatic pistols and police arm-bands, broke the glass-covered displays with a crowbar and escaped in a BMW with false number plates and a fake police gyroscope, officers said.

The French capital is frequently hit with jewellery robberies, though a recent police crackdown and increased security in stores selling precious gems have proved dissuasive against ordinary gangs.
