PARIS, Dec 23 (AFP) - Controversial French comedian Dieudonne used a performance in Paris Thursday night to announce his intention to stand in the country's 2007 presidential elections, his publicist said.

The 37 year-old comic, whose real name is Dieudonne M'Bala M'Bala, is of French-Cameroonian parents and has a large following among the black and Arab population.

His forthright views on Israel and the Palestinian issue have won him some enemies, and he has been unsuccessfully prosecuted for anti-Semitism.

Dieudonne stood in the 2002 election but withdrew his candidacy after failing to win the necessary sponsorship from 500 local politicians.

So far the veterans of the far-right and far-left, Jean-Marie Le Pen and Arlette Laguiller respectively, are the only French party leaders to declare themselves contenders for 2007.
