A 30-year-old, who pretended to be Manchester United footballer Patrice Evra's brother and chalked up huge bills at three luxury hotels, has been arrested.

Versailles – A conman passed himself off as Manchester United footballer Patrice Evra's brother and ran up huge bills at three luxury Parisian hotels, French judicial sources said Thursday.

The 30-year-old, who has no genuine connection with the French international left-back, has been arrested and has so far been charged with stealing around EUR 10,000 in the case of one of the hotels, they said.

According to investigators, the young man had made three stays at the luxury Trianon Palace in Versailles since the start of July.

On booking, the hotel had received a fax carrying what appeared to be Evra's signature, endorsing his "brother" and providing a series of bank card numbers to cover any expenses he might run up and allow him to receive cash advances.

The suspect presented himself as a wealthy football agent with an address on the seafront Croisette in the upscale Mediterranean resort of Cannes.

Hotel managers became suspicious during his fourth stay and called police. The bank account numbers – some of them already blocked – turned out to be from several businesses, banks and individuals in Europe and Russia.

He was arrested in his hotel room on Monday and charged on Wednesday. Police are now talking to two more hotels, including the Hilton in Paris's La Defense business district, where he is believed to have stayed.
