Cocaine haul seized in English Channel

CHERBOURG, France, Aug 7, 2007 (AFP) - Some 600 kilogrammes of cocaine (1,320 pounds) have been seized on board a yacht in the English Channel, in a joint operation by French and British police, French officials said Tuesday.

CHERBOURG, France, Aug 7, 2007 (AFP) - Some 600 kilogrammes of cocaine (1,320 pounds) have been seized on board a yacht in the English Channel, in a joint operation by French and British police, French officials said Tuesday.

The yacht, which set sail from the Caribbean, was carrying an estimated 16-18 million euros (22-24 million dollars) worth of drugs towards a port in northern Europe.

Intercepted at sea on Monday on the basis of international maritime intelligence, it was escorted to the French military port of Cherbourg to be searched.
