CALAIS, France, Sept 1, 2006 (AFP) - One person was killed and six others badly hurt in violent skirmishes early Friday between immigrants in Calais, northern France, police said.

The clashes, on a truck parking lot, were believed to be linked to a conflict between people smugglers who try to get the immigrants into Britain, officers said.

The injured were being treated in several hospitals in the region.

Since the 2002 closure of the Sangatte refugee shelter close to Calais, immigrants have taken to walking the streets in the area while trying to find ways to get on vehicles headed to Britain. Up to 200 can be seen wandering around Calais at night.

Smugglers ask up to EUR 2,000 euros to take on the immigrants, often putting them in the back of trucks loaded on to ferries.
