PARIS, Jan 12, 2007 (AFP) - Even French President Jacques Chirac's wife is being kept guessing about whether her husband plans to stand for reelection later this year, it emerged.

"My husband, as he has said many times, will speak (about his plans) when the moment comes. He will make his decision on his own," Bernadette Chirac said on the French evening television news.

"Surely all French people understand that the president of the Republic does not share his thoughts on such a subject with his family. He will inform me the day before."

According to a recent poll, 81 percent of those questioned believe Chirac should abstain from running for a third term later this year, with just 19 percent saying he should run again.

The 74-year-old's silence on the matter has stoked speculation that he may run again, however, raising fears on the right that he may steal votes from the main conservative candidate -- and Chirac's archenemy -- Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy.

The first round is scheduled for April 22, with any run-off on May 6.
