Chirac to bid farewell to French in televised address

PARIS, May 14, 2007 (AFP) - President Jacques Chirac will bid farewell to the people of France in a televised address Tuesday the day before he hands over to his successor Nicolas Sarkozy, his office said.

PARIS, May 14, 2007 (AFP) - President Jacques Chirac will bid farewell to the people of France in a televised address Tuesday the day before he hands over to his successor Nicolas Sarkozy, his office said.

The 74-year-old conservative leader, who has been at the centre of French politics for nearly half a century, will make a broadcast to the nation at 8:00 pm (1800 GMT).

Chirac will vacate the presidential Elysee palace on Wednesday. He has been president for the last 12 years, before which he served twice as prime minister and 18 years as mayor of Paris.
