PARIS, May 6 (AFP) - French President Jacques Chirac congratulated British Prime Minister Tony Blair on the victory of his Labour Party in Britain's elections on Friday, and stressed the need for their two countries to work together.

Sending France's "warm congratulations" for Labour's third election victory in a row, Chirac said: "A lot of shared challenges lie ahead for us, which we will meet together: building Europe, fighting poverty, sustainable development."

"In taking over the presidency of the European Union and the Group of Eight this year, the United Kingdom will be playing a crucial role," he added. "As you know, you will find France at your side."

"I am convinced that we will be able, together, to face up to these challenges through the closeness that has grown between us over the years."

Chirac's office said he had added a handwritten postscript to the message, wishing Blair, who turned 52 on Friday, a happy birthday.
