PARIS, Aug 2 (AFP) - French President Jacques Chirac on Monday pledged to send emergency aid to Paraguay after a deadly shopping center blaze in the capital Asuncion killed nearly 300 people.

"I have asked the government to examine without delay, and in liaison with you, the details about sending emergency aid to the victims and their families," Chirac wrote in a letter to Paraguayan President Nicanor Duarte.

The French leader conveyed his condolences to Duarte and relatives of those killed in the fire.

At least 296 people were killed and more than 300 other injured on Sunday when fire swept through a supermarket located on the outskirts of Asuncion, according to the latest official toll.

Police and witnesses blamed the high toll on the fact that the doors of the shopping center were locked by security guards.
