PARIS, March 30 (AFP) - French President Jacques Chirac said Wednesday that Paris remained at the ready to provide aid in earthquake-hit areas of Indonesia and offered his condolences to the families of the hundreds of victims.

"Indonesia has once again been hit by a massive earthquake. The number of victims has only increased in the past three days," Chirac told a weekly cabinet meeting, according to government spokesman Jean-Francois Cope.

"International solidarity, especially that of France and Europe, was immediately expressed. We remain mobilised to respond immediately to any requests" for aid, the French president added.

Cope said Chirac "offered his sincere condolences and those of the French people to the Indonesian people and government.

A huge earthquake struck off the west coast of Indonesia's main northern island of Sumatra late Monday, and officials say that up to 1,000 people may have been killed.
