PARIS, March 15 (AFP) - French President Jacques Chirac on Monday congratulated Spain's Socialist Party leader Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero on his election win and urged a tougher joint effort to stamp out terrorism.

In a message of congratulations made public by Chirac's office, the French leader invited the Spanish prime minister-elect, whose party defeated the ruling conservative Popular Party, to visit Paris in the near future.

"I send you my most profound congratulations and wish you all the success at a time when you are preparing to take charge of the government of your country," Chirac said.

The French president expressed his solidarity with Zapatero "in the dramatic ordeal that your country is now going through" after last week's bombings in Madrid that killed 200 people and wounded 1,500 others.

"I am convinced that, in these difficult days, the solid friendship between Spain and France will allow us to intensify the fight against terrorism as well as the partnership between our two countries, to the benefit of a stronger, safer and more efficient Europe," Chirac noted.
