PARIS, Jan 14 (AFP) - President Jacques Chirac and his Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin both saw a big increase in their popularity ratings in the last month, according to a poll released Wednesday.

Raffarin was judged favourably by 44 percent of interviewees in the IPSOS survey - up from 34 percent in December - and Chirac by 58 percent - up from 52 percent.

The jump coincided with the government's decision to push through a law banning Islamic headscarves and other religious insignia from the classroom, as well as with a small fall in unemployment and the first signs of returning economic growth.
