PARIS (AFP) - A Chinese illegal immigrant woman was seriously injured on Thursday after jumping from a first floor window in eastern Paris to avoid a police check, officers said.
Early investigation findings suggested the young woman was visiting a Chinese friend, panicked when police officers turned up to hand him a court summons and leaped from a window overlooking a busy main road.
She was hospitalised in serious condition, possibly in a coma, according to police.
Last month a 12-year-old Russian boy was plunged into a coma for several weeks after falling from a fourth-storey window during a police raid targeting his father, an illegal immigrant, in the northern city of Amiens.
The incident sparked angry protests and calls for an end to a wave of raids against illegal immigrants.
In line with a pledge by President Nicolas Sarkozy, the French government has stepped up the deportation of illegal immigrants, whose number is estimated at between 200,000 and 400,000. It has set a target of 25,000 this year.
The French parliament on Thursday adopted a new immigration bill -- the fourth since 2002 -- that tightens the rules for migrants wanting to join their families in France and gives the nod to DNA tests to prove family ties.
